English Premier League giants Manchester United are in the final stages of signing Dutch superstar Cody Gakpo from PSV.

Dutch striker Cody Gakpo began his football journey at the EVV Eindhoven academy. However, after a year, PSV tied him up.

The striker then rose through the ranks and was promoted to PSV’s reserve side. He produced consistent performances for Jong PSV and debuted for the senior team in 2018. Gakpo then gradually established himself as a starter in the PSV squad.

After playing many games for the Dutch youth teams, the PSV striker made his senior team debut in 2021. Cody Gakpo claimed the Dutch Footballer of the Year award for the 2021-22 season by scoring 21 goals in 47 games.

Now, according to a report by Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Manchester United are about to “finish a deal” for Cody Gakpo in the upcoming January transfer window.

After joining Manchester United, Erik ten Hag asked the board to sign some specific players who can help him play his specific style. Although United managed to land almost all of their targets, Cody Gakpo remained one of the names that the Red Devils failed to sign.

Instead of Gakpo, United brought in Ajax winger Antony. The Brazilian winger has since established himself on the right wing and is giving consultant performances. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo has also had a great start to the season. The Dutch international has scored nine goals and dished out eleven assists in the Eredivisie so far.

This is by far the best start for Cody Gakpo and now the Red Devils have reignited their interest in him. Interestingly, due to PSV’s financial problems, Gakpo will be available for just £25m. This is a very affordable price for a player of Gakpo’s quality.

Earlier, Gakpo confirmed in an interview about United’s failed attempt. “I was close to leaving PSV. I spoke to Erik ten Hag several times at Manchester United, in the end, the deal didn’t go through…and it was a shame,” Gakpo said.

As well as United, Southampton and Leeds also came very close to signing the striker in the latest transfer window. But Gakpo decided to stay at PSV for the time being. But now he is reportedly finally ready to move from his current club in January.

Before the transfer window, Gakpo will be part of the Dutch team. The striker will start for the Netherlands at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Strong performances at the perennial event will add to his stock.

Manchester United will face Aston Villa in their next game.
